Hi there,

Kidney Function

Kidneys are the most important organ for controlling your fluid balance.

Your kidneys job is to filter your blood, removing access fluid and waste substances dissolved in it and sending it to your bladder from where it is eventually released as urine. All the blood in the body passes through your kidneys about twenty times a day.

If your kidneys stopped functioning, all the fluid you drink would accumulate in your blood and around your body cells, and all the waste products normally excreted by your kidneys would stay inside you and poison you.

Stress on the kidneys can lead to kidney damage and to a reduction of their ability to siphon excess fluid out of your body.

What are major causes of kidney stress?

  • Eating too much salt, sugar, protein or fat;
  • Deficiencies of B6 and magnesium and selenium;
  • Mercury and other toxic substances can also harm your kidneys.

In eastern philosophy kidneys are considered an important role in maintaining our drive, upholding our energy (chi) and the season it relates to is winter.  Winter is a time to rest, nuture this energy so that when Spring comes we have the energy to take on new roles/events in our lives.  Also remember the wise words of our grandmothers "keep your kidneys warm".

So what can I do to improve my kidney function?

  • Reduce your salt, sugar, protein and fat.
  • Maintaining water intake; though it is important that this water is room temperature as if chilled it will negatively effect the kidneys.
  • Hot ginger tea - slice a fresh piece of root ginger into a tea cup, add hot water, infuse and then drink - this is a great warmer for the body and if drank at night ginger reduces any digestive issues you might have.
  • If you suffer from a sore lower back, cold back, bottom or upper legs make an effort to wear merino or something to keep that area warm . .  this is a sign of disrupted flow in the kidney area.
  • Rock Salt: Click here for further detail.  This is a remedy that has been used for many years to increase the heat in the kidney area and raise someones energy.

As a practitioner working in the field of lymphatics it is vital for our clients to have good kidney function.  As you can see by the above these organs play a  vital role in eliminating the extra fluid and toxicity in the body and therefore is important to achieve optimum results in lymphatic therapy.

Take the time to nuture your kidneys, rest, drink water and replenish your energy.

When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor.  Its to enjoy each step along the way.
